Silvermine/ Invitation

The installation named “Invitation” speaks of the space made up by interaction with new surroundings, in this case the forest, which is itself a part of the Silvermine Art School in the city of New Canaan, Connecticut.

The Silvermine Fullbright Art Residence was established in 2019, on the initiative of the husband-and-wife team Jan and Robert Dilenschneider. The residence itself turned out to be an unexpected and incredibly pleasant opportunity for me during my postdoctoral research stay in NYC, USA. For the first time I was able to work fully outside, clearly depriving myself of the inescapable post-production activities which had previously been essential parts of my work. In this case, form was freed from figurativeness which, in my previous works, functioned at the level of “pressure”. The materials I was working with were: hemp rope, jute, clay, soil and tree branches. The focus was placed on the space and the way to overcome it, i.e. how to be in balance within both the space and with the sculpture.
The freedom I was offered was a kind of temptation, leaving me no possibilities of “making any mistake”.
I posed the question about how a space is constructed and to what extent it builds the sculpture within it.
I believe that a sculpture which exists in random space is not possible.
The work itself invites the audience to enter the space of the sculpture and to remain there.
